The First Week of 1st Grade and EP3

It was the first day of school and our boys were ready to go!  The night before we laid out their clothes, packed their bags, and went to bed early because we all knew that 6:30am was going to be here before we knew it.  Most of the summer the boys were getting up between 7-7:30, so this transition wouldn’t be too hard on them.  For breakfast they gobbled down some pancakes with syrup and whipped cream and a big glass of OJ.  With their bellies full, they got dressed, and we headed outside for our traditional in front of the house photo.  Although I laid the camera out early hoping that the lens would adjust to the August humidity, it didn’t so a few of them are cloudy.  Oh well, I’d rather have cloudy pictures instead of no pictures.  🙂

Davy is now officially a first grader.  His teacher is Mrs. McElroy.  Matty is in a Preschool 3 class called EP3 and his teacher is Ms. Adkins.  Neither one of them seemed nervous, sad, nor anxious…just excited!  We loaded into the car and off we went for drop off!

This year instead of walking Davy in, we let him jump out of the car from the car line just like the other older kids.  He was happy.

We walked Matty into his new class.  He too did a really good job.  I expected him to be a little clingy, instead I think that he was just excited.  We kissed him good bye and we were off!

Davy’s teacher shared some photos from throughout the week… Looks like everyone is have a wonderful time.

First grade boys on Friday’s officially have to dress in a blazer and tie, doesn’t Davy look so handsome…

Here’s to a wonderful year!

First Day of School Strawberry Brownie Cupcakes

Quite a few people have asked me what’s it like to officially be a stay at home mom, now that the kids are back at school that is…and I say that it is AWESOME!!!!

After Andy and I dropped the boys off, he left me back at home and headed off to work.  As I was standing in my kitchen, I explained to mom that if we had a grandfather clock, the ticking would have been the only sound echoing through the house.  It was stone silent.  No children, friends, TV, music, washing machine, dog barking, you name it…there was nothing.  Molly was looking at me suspiciously, so we went for a walk.  Afterwards, I went into cleaning mode!  The upstairs was my focus and my goal was to wade my way through the disaster of a mess by the end of the week.

I thought that it would be nice to make the kids a fun snack when they got home from school, so Pinterest was where I landed!  We love strawberry and we love brownies, so I knew that this was the recipe for the day.

Strawberry Brownie Cupcakes

  • 1 box of strawberry cake mix
  • 1 box of brownie mix
  • 1 can of cream cheese icing
Preheat the oven to 325.  I used Pam and greased two cupcakes pans.  In one bowl, prepare the strawberry mix according to the package directions.  In another bowl, prepare the brownie mix according to the package directions.  Fill each cupcake with 1/3 brownie mix and then top with 1/3 strawberry cake mix.  Bake for 25 minutes or until done.  Top with cream cheese icing.

You Did What While On Vacation?!

Most everyone knows that we had a wonderful, adventurous, and amazing summer…so in the spirit of trying to document it all, this one “little tiny” thing couldn’t go unmentioned….

It is the end of our first week at the beach and we have two more to go.  We were on the dock behind the house fishing into the canal.  I had my camera with me so that I could get some great shots of the boys.  I stepped around Davy towards the end so that I could get a picture of all three of them in my frame and that’s when Davy flung his fishing pole backwards to cast it in.  I however was not paying attention and proceeded to step back out-of-the-way and stepped right off of the dock.  In my mind everything slowed down as I was having the realization of “oh crud, I’m going into the canal and am going to get wet”, so I threw the camera up onto the dock so it wouldn’t get ruined.  The drop was roughly 6 feet and you would think that the water would be deep, but it wasn’t.  It was probably 1 1/2-2 ft deep.  I landed on my left foot, heard my knee pop, and then curled up into the fetal position as I wanted to drown from the pain.

At this point, I am in such shock of the pain (which by the way is unlike anything I have ever felt) that Andy is yelling at me to get up and I can’t even really hear him.  In old cartoons, when the character hurts itself you see stars circling around its head, well I saw stars flashing everywhere.  My leg hurt so bad that at the time my knee just felt like I had barely bumped it on something.  I finally respond to Andy that I couldn’t stand up, and my sweet husband thinks it is because the water is too deep.  He jumps in…right into the oyster beds.  We are lucky that he only suffered the scrapes all over his feet and ankles because he easily could have done some damage too.

Five weeks prior Andy had shoulder surgery, so the question now is…”How am I going to get out of the canal?”  There was no chance of me putting even the slightest amount of weight on my left foot, so I couldn’t get up the dock ladder unless I jumped from rung to rung.  That was to hard and I was shaking (and crying) too much.  We call Kelly down from the house, she leans over the edge of the dock to grab me, Andy hoists me up onto his good shoulder, and with one pushing and one pulling I’m finally out and on the dock.  Still crying, I could have just laid there forever.

A lump the size of a mango began to form over my left ankle, so Andy decides that he is taking me straight to Blake Medical ER.  Andy and Brian lift me up and carry me to the car.  😦

I ended up breaking the fibula straight across, with another slight crack above it.  You’ll see on the x-ray that only the top of the crack displaced so we didn’t need to put a pin in…thank goodness.  Once we got to the ortho and he reviewed the films, he found another fissure crack on the inner ankle bone.  After being wrapped up, the Ortho decides on a walking boot.  I am so glad for many reasons, but the obvious were that 1. I could shower and 2. My foot swelled so bad (I swear it was the size of a football) that I kept having to loosen it.  A hard cast wouldn’t have allowed that.

I have to give a shout out to my husband here, because in the ER I was crying so bad, shaking, teeth chattering and all that he decided we had waited long enough for pain medicine so he began stalking the hallway.  There is something about a 6 foot 5 man hovering in a hallway that eventually has people stopping and asking if they can help you.  Pain pills arrived!  Yipee!

By the time we got home and went to bed, I woke up several hours later back in fierce pain and realizing that my knee hurts more than I originally thought.  It won’t straighten at all.  Andy encouraged me to bring it up with the Ortho and he ended up doing an MRI.  I severely bruised the bone and tore part of my ACL… 😦

So now I’m on crutches, with a heavy boot that I can’t put any weight on.  The house is on stilts and being at the beach all I could think about was sand all over this black boot.  For the first week, I didn’t really leave the house and I was so thankful for Brian and Kelly taking care of my boys.  They took them boating, to the Aquarium, movies, and to the beach.  She fed them, cared for them (and me), and essentially had six kids for the week…seven if you count my inability to do anything.  After the first week Andy ended up moving to the house full-time and taking off from work.  I was so thankful for him too and the boys loved him being there.  I eventually made it out to the beach with a garbage bag wrapped over the boot, it was so hot…but very functional.

It wasn’t the trip that we had dreamed of over the last year, but it was still a wonderful trip…just a little bit of a different one.  🙂

Well I am now writing this 8 weeks out and I still limp, my knee still won’t open, and my ankle is sooo stiff.  All in all I know that it is healing and I am so thankful because we all know that it could have been so much worse…  🙂

Boating and Tubing on the Intercoastal

Sometimes there just aren’t enough words to be able to fully express the love and gratitude that one has for beautiful friends…

As I am currently unable to do much of anything, Kelly and Brian decided that they were not going to let this situation get everyone down.  Today, they packed up all the kids and took them out for a boat ride and lunch at Rotten Ralph’s .  They said that the weather was beautiful, the morning water was calm, and they even saw dolphins.  The boys had a wonderful time tubing and driving the boat.  We heard that Davy made the 25 mile an hour club and rode on the tube 5 or 6 times.  Love my brave boy.

Thanks again Brian and Kelly… 🙂

13 Little People and the Beach

To say that the kids were excited to have friends come and visit…would be an understatement!  Robin and Nicole decided to bring their kids down for the day and altogether we had 13 children: Colin, Landon, Evan, Ashlynn, Connor, Caiden, Davy, Livi, Emma, Reece, Matty, Jack, and Hudson.  They ran, played, built sand castles, fed the seagulls, snorkeled, boogie boarded, and went hunting for sand dollars and sand crabs.  They had a great time and we loved getting to tell Ashlynn ‘Happy 8th Birthday”…..

Thanks for coming…  🙂

Before Breakfast Beach Walk

The Weather Channel predicted that the percentage of rain today was going to be 70%, so when we woke up and saw the sun shining in through the bedroom windows we took advantage of the good weather and headed for the beach.  Forget the breakfast and forget the coffee…throw on those bathing suits and let’s go!!!  They would need to get their wiggles out at some point, so we figured now was as good as time as any to start.  We parked at the Rod n Reel pier and took the walkway over to Bean Point.

Yesterday, this couple went walking by us with their hands loaded down with big shells, so we asked them where they found them and they said further down the beach where the currents hit the shore.  We were certain that we were going to find the most beautiful shells, and of course we didn’t find one.  We walked from one side of the island to the other…and nothing.

We had a wonderful morning and left the beach thoroughly exhausted… By the time we got back to the house the kids were ready for breakfast, and we were ready for coffee!

Swimming With The Dolphins

Our bedrooms are on the east side of the house and at 6:51 am I hear, “Mommy, it’s morning…can we go to the beach now?” Gotta love little Matty bear.  Of course my answer was, “Matty, mommy is sleeping…not yet and go away.” 🙂  At 8am we fixed breakfast and at 9am we headed to the beach.  The weather was beautiful and the water was calm.  Paradise.  Immediately after we set up the beach chairs and toys Colin says, “Look mom a dolphin!”  We grab our cameras and start scanning the horizon.  Sure enough there was a dolphin family, including a little baby dolphin.  The kids loved chasing after them in the water and it was so fun to watch their faces as they all got to swim with the dolphins.

AMI Move In Day

Beach Day has finally arrived!!!  After months of planning and waiting….the wait is over.  Kelly and the kids came in late Friday night from Virginia, so the last bit of packing Saturday morning was a piece of cake and we were off for the 3pm check in.  The first year that we went to the beach we stayed for a week; we didn’t really even begin to relax until day five or so and then it was time to pack up and go home.  Last year, we decided on two weeks, but at the end we were so sad to leave that we pushed this year to three.  Three whole weeks of fun in the sun and sand in the toes…

This is the house…318 Iris.  It is a four bedroom with a pool on the canal… and we love it!

Papa Bear helped us bring down some of the bigger items in the back of his truck.

Molly and the Hermit Crabs made the trip.  Lucy will be here next weekend.

The dock leading out to the canal…

There are two lime trees in the back yard and both of them are covered with fruit!  Hmmm. Limeaids, Cornonas, Mojitos, Margaritas, the possibilities are endless…

There was an afternoon storm that the boys sat outside to watch and afterwards there was the most beautiful double rainbow…

We moved one bed so the three older boys could share a room…

It’s gonna be a great three weeks…  🙂

Day Trip to Gwynn’s Island

Being in Richmond and so close to Uncle John, I just had to take the boys out to Gywnn’s Island to visit for the day.  It was short notice, but we were fortunate enough to make it work and an added bonus…Susan came out to spend a couple of hours with us too.  Colin and Emma joined us for the day, and boy did they all have a good time!

Justice the dog couldn’t resist a good swim with the kids…

Davy and Colin on the lookout…

The poor little apple tree that Matty and Emma picked all of Ms. Penny’s apples off of…

Susan grilled us all hot dogs for lunch…they were delicious!

Emma looking at the butterflies…

Matty, Davy, Cousin Susan, and Uncle John Dixon…

I love this photo!

On our way off the island, we stopped into the local seafood shop and bought some fresh crabmeat to make crab cakes…Yum Yum!!!
