52 Week Challenge

Every year on January 1st Andy and I try to come up with a new and different New Year’s Resolution, one that is actually a challenge and doable.  I love to cook and I have so many cookbooks that I have never really used, so I decided to make my resolution “One New Recipe a Week”.  Although I started this challenge at the beginning of the year…I see no reason why I can’t just keep it going and going and going.

So far, I have loved this challenge because there are many nights during the week where I find myself cooking the same things over and over again out of ease and habit, and by doing this challenge I am adding new things into the rotation and expanding my children’s palate.

As a family we all participate in the planning and cooking…we hope that yours will too…

Here’s to the next 52 weeks….  Bon Appétit!

New Years Eve 2009

Today is New Year’s Eve.  This is mine and Andy’s 12th together and every year it gets better and better.  Today we stayed around the house and after naps we created our first Zahn family painting.  We set it up in the driveway, laid the paints around it on paper plates, and just went at it.  It took Davy a bit to wake up and get into it, but eventually he did.  It is 36×36 and now hangs over the TV in the man room.

For dinner Brian, Kelly and the kids came over.  We cooked filets, lobster tails, risotto, potatoes and drank Greygoose spritzers with cranberry.  Yum Yum!  The meal was cooked perfectly.  Afterwards, we attempted taking a few pictures of the kids, you can imagine how that went, and then it was time to put the babies to bed.  The older boys had waited so patiently to light the fireworks and were just wild when we told them it was time.  Not too much, just a few smoke bombs, sparklers, and TNT’s.  It was enough to satisfy them.

We walked down to the field and let them play chase for about 20 minutes in the dark.  We could barely see them, but we could hear them giggling and laughing.  Also, all around us we could hear fireworks.  Not the small kind either, the big ones.  A lot of people were out and it really was a great evening.  They went home and we popped open the Champagne.  Davy stayed up the entire evening with us.  At about 11:30 pm more fireworks started to go off so we snuck out the back of our house, cut through some trees and sat in the grass on the 6th hole tee box.  We could see fireworks in 3 different places, it wasn’t to cold out, and it was just perfect.  Andy ran inside to get Matty so the 4 of us could sit together and stare out over the pond.  At about 10 till we came inside, climbed in the bed and waited for the ball to drop.  I can’t believe that it is already 2010.  As Andy so kindly pointed out, we will have officially lived in 5 different decades: 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 2000’s, and teen’s.  Nothing like making me feel even older…  The ball dropped, we gave each other big big big kisses and then all of us went off to bed.  Davy slept in the little bed and Matty in his crib.  Hello 2010!!!

>First Car

> Davy’s first car is a beautiful red jeep made by Peg Prego.  He loves to drive himself and his friends around the neighborhood.  The car has some great performance including 3MPH and an infinite amount of gas mileage as it is has an electrical plug!

When he can finally learn to not drive into other cars or people, we’ll consider taking the safety switch off and letting him ramp up to 7mph.

>Easter Bunny! Candy!

>

“Good Morning Davy! Guess who came to see you last night? The Easter Bunny!”
“Yeah!”
“What did he bring you?”
“CANDY!”
“Oh boy Davy, lets go look for your basket!”
He was so cute. He took off for the stairs, half jumped down them, rounded the corner, and there was his basket. He just squealed with delight at the toys and the candy. The first thing that he pulled out was Toy Story 2, “Mama, Buzz”. So that is how we spent our morning getting ready for our Easter lunch with the family.

>Usual Suspects – Happy Halloween!!!!

>
Reports have surfaced that a rogue UPS Delivery Man and what could best be described as an undersized Red Monster were terrorizing the good people of Davis Islands on the outskirts of downtown Tampa.

Witnesses clain the two suspects were apparently seen going door to door demanding candy…

Although we can find no person that actually felt intimidated by the duo, they were seen leaving the islands with a fire truck escort and Mr. Incredible. No injuries were reported.

>Falling Leaves

>
Mom and I took Davy up to North Carolina this October to experience a little mountain fall. The weather was beautiful and up in the Highlands we hit the peak season. The trees were bright with shades of fall colors: reds, yellows, and oranges. Our last morning there the temperature was in the lower 30’s and the air was crisp and clean. We had a lot of fun collecting leaves to bring back to Davy’s school for show-n-tell.

>Corn on the Cob….Yummy!

>
So after our week long trip up to the Hampton’s for Brandie and Laurence’s wedding, we brought back some of the best and sweetest corn we had ever eaten. The lady at Southwest airlines check in looked a little confused when our bag was overweight and we opened it up to move some of the corn to another bag. Who would have thought that 12 ears of corn would weigh 12 pounds. Davy loved the corn, as you can see, it was his first time biting it off of the cob and he didn’t do so bad…..

>Petting the Sting Rays

>
Its Family Fun Day at the Tropicana stadium so we took Davy to watch a little baseball. The free gift of the day was a Devil Ray’s lunch box, the old fashioned metal kind. right now it is being put to good use with Davy’s current baseball cards. We also waited in line to feed and pet the sting rays. To feed them put the small fish between your third and fourth fingers and then lay your hand face up in the water. The rays swim over the top and gobble up the fish. Davy will get to do that at another time. He did have fun however petting the sting rays.
