Holmes Beach and After Dinner Fun

August 3: Wednesday

Every morning while we are making breakfast, the little ones beeline for the golf cart.  Jack has taken to calling it the tractor…so ‘The Tractor’ it is.  The front of this house is all sliding glass doors to a screened in patio which faces the road, so it really is perfect for us and them because they can play outside and be watched.

To change up the beach fun, we decided to head down to Holmes Beach today.  The little ones have been asking to go to the park and we knew that there was a playground here.

It didn’t take long for the older boys to make a few friends…  Four older boys asked them if they wanted to play volleyball and frisbee.

After we got back from the beach, they all hopped into the pool and cooled off with popsicles.

For our after dinner fun, we headed a little further down to the beach and parked the golf cart on Palmetto.  We love the wooden footpaths that head down to the beach and they did a great job pausing for a photo for us.

Feeding the seagulls…

Bean Point and Fishing on the Pier

August 2: Tuesday

Today we started our day with some scrambled eggs and bacon for the children.  Afterwards, I ran over to Ginny and Jane’s and picked Kelly and I up a couple of Latte’s.  About 30 minutes later Brandie and Laurence stopped by and said, “Let’s go to Bean Point!”  We stopped by Beach Bums to find out exactly where the foot path was, and we were off.  I had to park the golf cart at the Rod and Reel pier, but the views and solitude were worth it.

This picture is so funny to me….  For some reason we have had terrible AT&T service today and poor Brandie has been constantly checking her phone just hoping that her work emails are coming through.

Me and my Matty Bear….

After dinner we decided to take the boys fishing; with the sun setting on the west side and it being a little later in the day we were hoping that it wouldn’t be too hot.   In retrospect, this is something that definitely needs to be done with the daddy’s here….there are just to many little people wanting help with baiting their hook, casting, and pulling off the caught fish.  We bought some bait over at the General Store and went down to the Anna Maria pier.  The boys were so excited when uncle Laurence showed up to help them.  All of the big boys caught fish, they were so happy!

I love this picture because Emma’s face is just classic….

Let’s Ride the Waves

August 1: Monday

We have found that the most pleasant time to be at the beach is in the evening.  The sun is setting and not overly hot, there is a wonderful breeze, it’s not to crowded, and the children get to run and play before bed.  Tonight we took out all of the boogie boards, they are a big hit this year for all of the children.  The waves have been the perfect size for our little guys and the current hasn’t been to strong either…  :O)

Brandie, Laurence, and Ryla stopped by for a quick visit.  How cute are they on their 4 seater bike!

AMI Vacation 2011 – First Weekend

July 30-31: Saturday and Sunday

YAY!!!  It’s vacation time!  With much anticipation we have been waiting for this vacation for what feels like months!  We reserved the house back in May, and we have been dreaming of our two weeks of fun in the sun all summer.  This year Kelly and I decided to set our eyes on Anna Maria Island.  We love it here and come quite often for the day, she’s never been here, and it is close enough for the husbands to drive back and forth as needed for work.  The house we found is Anna’s Cottage – 309 Spring Ave; it is on the north end one block off of the main street Pine Ave and is three blocks to the beach.  The house is a three bedroom with a pool and is adorably shabby.  Check in time was 3pm, so Saturday morning we packed up and headed out.

Here is Andy’s truck: 6 scooters, 5 bikes, 3 tricycles, 3 fishing poles, 2 wagons, beach toys, chairs, and tackle boxes, 1 bike baby seat, and 1 easy shade.  We loaded up the van, Kelly’s SUV, Brian’s Camry and off we went.

The beach house was everything we expected and so much more….  We are all in love with 309 Spring Ave.

I had to include this picture, because when we arrived at the house, a FedEx from work was already there waiting for me.  I just found it so funny that work beat me to my vacation….  :O)  If you are wondering what it is, I have been having computer issues and needed a new battery for my laptop.  After we had unloaded all of our stuff, we sat down to enjoy a nice cold beverage…  :O)

It was a little late and still a little warm, so we let the boys swim in the pool out back.

We went for a walk down to the beach so Matty could see the water….  All little Matty has been asking for, for the last two weeks, is to see the beach.

Kelly’s cousin Brook is still in town visiting and she agreed to watch the boys so Andy and I could go out to dinner.  While posing for a picture, I guess the boys are so used to the family photo they just snuck in like it was normal and smiled.  :O)  Love them.

The next morning, we decided to take the boys fishing before it got to hot.  We went over to the Anna Maria Pier.  At the end of the pier they have a bait shop, but much to our dismay they were out of bait.  How does that happen?  Especially, on a weekend.  We let the boys cast a few times and then we packed it up because we knew that they weren’t going to catch anything.

After naps we picked up our golf cart and went to Scoops for some ice cream.

Aunt Brandie and Uncle Laurence arrived today so we had to go over and see baby Ryla.  Their rental house is 3 beach blocks from ours.  She just loves Matty bear.

For dinner we all went to the Waterfront Restaurant.  7 children and 7 adults.  Afterwards, we went over to the beach to feed the seagulls and watch the sunset.

My favorite house on the island.  :O)

Sand Angels…

At 8:30 we drove back to Brandie’s house to drop them off, we hopped back on the golf cart, and it wouldn’t start.  So funny…  so we left it there and walked back home to put the boys to bed.  You can see how tired & wet they are… :O)  I love being on vacation.

Davy Loses His First Tooth

For months now Davy has had three wiggly teeth and we have been patiently waiting for one of his teeth to fall out.  One by one his friends were losing their teeth and we just knew that it was going to be his turn some time this summer.  We even went out and bought a plastic tooth that opens up and on one side it holds his lost tooth and on the other side it holds the money that the Tooth Fairy leaves behind.

On Wednesday morning, after I dropped Davy off at summer camp, I receive a phone call from one of the Kindergarten teachers at the camp.  Now, it is never a good feeling when your phone rings and you look down only to see that it is the school calling.  She immediately starts off by saying, “Davy is fine!  But I wanted to call you and let you know that Davy had an accident on the playground.  He was on the monkey bars, he fell off, and lost one of his front bottom teeth.  I took him to the school nurse and she looked in his mouth.  We think that the tooth that he lost was probably already loose and she pulled on the tooth next to it and it also is really loose, so we suspect that it will also fall out pretty quickly.  But don’t worry his mouth is fine.”

Since I already knew that these two bottom teeth were super wiggly, I wasn’t really concerned.  In fact, his adult teeth have already started coming in behind his baby teeth and we knew that they were being pushed out.  What I was concerned about was the lost tooth!  I asked her if they found the tooth and she said “No, but we did look for it and that they just couldn’t find it in the mulch”.  Oh, No!!!  She said that he cried a little bit and explained that this happens all the time and that children just have to write the Tooth Fairy a letter, she understands.  My heart was so broken for him.

Soooo, today I parked my car and went in to pick him up versus waiting in the car line and he was so excited when he saw me that all my fears went away.  He actually loved the idea of writing the Tooth Fairy a letter….so that is what we did.  We also took a picture of Davy and his big smile with the missing tooth, printed it, and left it on the bunk bed so she had proof of his lost tooth.

The Tooth Fairy came to visit Davy and brought him $5.00….  He was so happy!

Key Lime Pie with Gingersnap Crust

Junior League Cookbook Blog Article: Key Lime Pie with Gingersnap Crust

“A Tampa native shared this incredible, decades-old recipe for this iconic Florida dessert.  No trip to the Sunshine State is complete without a slice.”

You’ll find this caption printed with the recipe in the new cookbook Capture the Coast, and it got me wondering: 1. Who invented the Key Lime Pie and 2. How long ago?  So like anyone with a curious mind I searched the internet and found this on whatscookingamerica.net.

“As to who made the first key lime pie, no one really knows for sure as it has never been documented. The most likely story is that William Curry (1821-1896), a ship salvager and Florida’s first self-made millionaire (commonly referred to as rich Bill), had a cook that was simply know as Aunt Sally. It was Aunt Sally who created the pie in the late 1800s.  Some historians think that Aunt Sally didn’t create the Key Lime Pie, but probably perfected a delicacy that was the creation of area fishermen. William Curry built a lavish mansion for his family in 1855 that still is being used today as the Curry Mansion Inn.

It was not until the 1930s that the first recipes were written down. Until then everyone just knew how to make the pie. No fresh milk, no refrigeration, and no ice was available in the Keys until the arrival of tank trucks with the opening of the Overseas Highway in 1930. Because of this lack of milk, local cooks had to rely on canned sweetened condensed milk, which was invented in 1856 by Gail Borden. Key lime may be the star ingredient of the key lime pie, but it is the sweetened condensed milk that makes it so smooth and delicious.

The key lime tree, which is native to Malaysia, probably first arrived in the Florida Keys in the 1500s with the Spanish. Key limes look like confused lemons, as they are smaller than a golf ball with yellow-green skin that is sometimes splotched with brown. They are also known as Mexican or West Indian limes. When a hurricane in 1926 wiped out the key lime plantations in South Florida, growers replanted with Persian limes, which are easier to pick and to transport. Today the key lime is almost a phantom and any remaining trees are only found in back yards and their fruit never leave the Florida Keys. Key limes are also grown for commercial use in the Miami area.

In 1994, the State Legislature officially recognized Key lime pie as an important symbol of Florida. The road to becoming the official state pie, was not an easy one. Since the 1980s, North Florida lawmakers have debated that a pie made of pecans, grown in Florida, would better reflect the
state’s history. House Bill 453 and Senate Bill 676 of the Florida Legislature’s Regular 2006 Session made the Key Lime Pie the official Florida
state pie as of July 1, 2006.”

I hope that you learned something new with this post…I sure did!  Next time you make this delicious pie you’ll be able to give your friends and family a little bit of history or trivia!  Enjoy and Bon Appétit!

Florida Key Lime
Pie with Gingersnap Crust

  • 1 ½ cups crumbled gingersnap cookies
  • ¾ cup sweetened flaked coconut
  • ¼ cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • ½ cup Key lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon lime zest
  • 4 egg yolks
  • Whipped cream
  • Toasted sweetened flaked coconut

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Pulse the cookies in a food processor until finely ground.  Add ¾ cup coconut and pulse to mix.  Add the butter and pulse to mix.  Press over the bottom and up the side of a 9-inch pie plate.  Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown.  Cool on a wire rack.  Maintain the oven temperature.  For a nuttier flavor, toast the coconut.

Combine the condensed milk, lime juice, lime zest and egg yolks in a bowl and beat well.  Pour into the cooled crust.  Bake for 7 to 10 minutes or until set.  Let stand until cool.  Top each slice with a dollop of whipped cream and sprinkle with toasted coconut.  The pie also may be made using a graham cracker crust.

Matty’s Big Boy Bed

So last weekend Andy and I got up, flipped on the coffee pot, and then we heard “Hi Daddy”.  Little Matty had climbed out of his crib.  Now, about a year ago he started climbing out, and we were fine with that….but day after day he kept getting up earlier and earlier and that just wasn’t going to work.  So Andy and I ended up turning his crib around putting the high back in the front, pushing it against the corner of the wall, and then pushing his armoire up against the other side.  Now the front was to tall and both of his sides were blocked.  You may be thinking “how high could the back of the crib actually be?”, and well lets just say that I had to stand on one of the kids stools and then drop him over the edge.  I always felt horrible dropping him in, but he thought it was funny and would laugh.

We decided it was time.  We packed the kids up in the truck and went to buy Matty’s bed.  Matty was so excited!  I don’t even know how to describe how excited he has been all week while we were converting his room.  He loves the color blue (even if half the time he calls it purple), so we picked out a nice bright color to paint the walls.  For the bedding I went over to pottery barn kids and bought a Madras quilt and pillow sham.  It definitely looks like him and it will go with whatever his favorite item of the moment is…firetrucks, surf boards, baseball, etc.

It took two days to move, paint, and assemble.  I couldn’t have gotten it all done without the help of Davy.  He painted this wall and he helped build Matty’s toy box bookshelf; thanks Davy!  The walls are still a little bare, but over time he will fill them up…  :O)  We decided to let Matty sleep on the little bed for the first two nights, just to make sure the paint fumes were mostly gone; and then here he is on his first night in his new bed!  So sweet!

Enjoy your new room beautiful boy…

Blueberry Crumble Cheesecake Bars

Junior League Cookbook Blog Article: Blueberry Crumble Cheesecake Bars

It was 8 o’clock in the morning and my next door neighbor Kelly and I were looking at our rambunctious children, brainstorming ideas for a  fun outdoor activity when it dawned on us… “Let’s go blueberry picking!”  The children all squealed with delight, we loaded up in the car, and headed over to our local “You pick blueberry farm.”

Prices range from farm to farm, but we always tend to end up at Church Lake Farm off of Racetrack Rd. in Westchase, where the blueberries are currently $3.00 a pound.

There are an abundance of farms to pick fruits and vegetables in the Tampa Bay area and one of the best websites that I have seen to help you find a place near your home is www.pickyourown.org.  Keep in mind that blueberries are officially in season here in Florida and blackberries are not too far behind…so the trick each weekend is to make sure you plan ahead and get out early, otherwise the best ones are picked over and gone before you get there.

Now, if you are like my mother you may be asking, ”What did you do with three pounds of blueberries?”  And the answer is: we ate them fresh, we made pancakes and muffins, tossed them into a salad, and made Blueberry Crumb Cheesecake Bars!  Yum Yum!!!  This delicious recipe comes from Capture the Coast and delights anyone who tries it!.

School’s Out!! Summer’s Here!!

School is officially out for everyone!!!  As the Westchase Elementary bus pulled up to the bus stop, so many parents were there just waiting to kick off the summer.  The children were met with blasts from water guns, water balloons, and silly string!  They ran and squealed with such joy.  Since it was a half day the neighborhood decided to throw a Summer’s Here party on the lawn.  There was pizza, snacks, drinks, and lots of frozen treats.  The boys were having such a good time, I just didn’t have the heart to put them down for a nap.  Davy and Connor even got to have a sleepover at Caiden’s.  It’s gonna be a great summer!  :O)
