Most of time when you head down to the beach at night it is really windy, so knowing this Kelly went out and bought a bunch of kites for our vacation. We went out two different nights to fly kites, the first night the breeze was slight and there were a lot of gnats so we went in early and then the second night it was perfect. Davy, Colin, and Connor each had their own kite and then Emma and Matty shared one. The kids just had a ball running up and down the beach watching the kites soar into the sky. Davy kept saying that he wanted his to go higher and higher and Matty kept asking to hold and try. We only had to untangle the lines a few times. The weather was nice and we also got to watch a beautiful sunset. Life is good.

Riding the LGI-Hideaway Bay Ferry
This ferry is what we took to get on and off Little Gasparilla Island. There are no cars on the island, however there are golf carts everywhere and a ton of wagons. We took 2 day trips off of the island and both times the kids were thrilled to get on the boat. The ferry runs every three hours during the week and every two hours on the weekends. While on the boat the kids looked for fish, crabs, birds, watched the dolphins chase the boat waves, and the captain even let Davy honk the horn.

Dancing in the Rain
After what felt like days and days and hours and hours of rain…with no end in sight Kelly says, “Well when life gives you lemons, you just have to make lemonade!” So that’s what we did. As long as there isn’t any thunder who cares if there is sunshine or rain?
We had been watching the radar on the The Weather Channel and it didn’t seem as if the rain was ever going to stop and the children just needed to get out and run…so they did! They danced in the rain, played chase and tag, made new friends who came out to join them, and gathered up buckets to have a water fight.
After dinner, we rallied and did it all over again on the beach in their pj’s. This time instead of having water fights, they had mud fights. They laughed, and squealed, and ran…Kelly and I of course got soaked, but to watch the sheer happiness on their faces was priceless. Andy said to me afterwards that he needed to remind himself to live in the moments and have more fun more often no matter with situation.

Fun on the Beach
There’s nothing better than being on vacation and watching your children just have a wonderful time. Playing on the beach means running, swimming, laughing, treasure hunting, digging, building, chasing Seagulls, growing and so much more. We love going to the beach!… so here are a few of the pictures that we took during the week.
Here Davy and Connor are walking from the condo over to the boardwalk that leads out onto the beach…
There are over 100 sea turtle nests on the island and there are 4 rare green sea turtle nests. We were hoping that we would have enough energy to get up around midnight and take the older boys out to see if we could see any eggs hatching…but we were to tired after long fun days of playing…next summer!
Davy, Colin, and Connor loved riding their Boogie Boards! They rode them for hours. The only problem that we had was after riding the waves onto shore they were to far down the beach and we would have to call them back…
I couldn’t help but take a picture of this perfect beach dog. Every morning that we were out we saw it lazily walk the beach with its owners. For a dog, it can’t get much better than this…
Davy and Connor were making sand angels…
The kids loved having the wagons on the beach. Davy and Connor were always wanting to help us pull the wagons, but in the loose sand with the babies in them they were kind of heavy, so this way they all got to climb in and out and take turns dragging it around…
After each trip to the beach we found it to be easiest if once we got to the condo they stripped down, were hosed off, and then headed inside “mostly” sand free…
Ahhh, how could watching six kids at the beach not be fun!!!!…..

Little Gasparilla Island
If you have never heard of Little Gasparilla Island, then there is a reason for that…the residents keep it a secret. As summer vacation is coming to a close, Kelly and I decided that it would be fun to take the kids to the beach for a week for one last getaway before school starts. It was through a recommendation of a friend that we ended up here at Hideaway Bay.
The island is in Charlotte County and located just north of Gasparilla Island and Boca Grande. The only way to get to the island is by ferry which runs only a few times a day, something that we weren’t really aware of when we arrived.
We got up in the morning, loaded the cars, and drove on down. The drive only took two hours so the trip wasn’t to long and it wasn’t to short. When we got to Placida Kelly had to pick up the rental key and we thought it best to buy groceries sooner rather than later. When we got to the unloading area, we were surprised to discover that the ferry was due to pick up at 2pm (8 minutes away) and then again at 5pm. Not wanting to miss the ferry we went into overdrive to get the cars unloaded and parked across the street. When the ferry arrived a few of the people who got off helped us get on.
Now there are no cars on the island, just golf carts and wagons so I am sure that you can picture how much stuff is needed for 2 adults and 6 kids for one week, including the groceries… We were lucky that a man aboard the ferry offered to help us get our things to the condo with his golf cart.
Whewww….. I’d like to think that all of this occurred because of perfect execution…but really it was just luck.

The kids had a wonderful time on the island. They rode the waves, walked the beach, built sand castles, dug for shells, looked for crabs and treasures, flew kites, counted turtle nests, and looked for island fruit (mangoes and coconuts).
And when the weather wasn’t the greatest they danced in the rain and splashed in the puddles.
On days we left the island the kids loved riding the ferry and watching the dolphins chase the waves.
Off the island we took them down to the Boca Grande Lighthouse, the Loose Caboose for lunch (which used to be an old train station), the Pink Pony for ice cream, and Lemon Bay Park to go hiking.
We spent our evenings watching movies and when the weather was nice we watched the most beautiful sunsets.

Wk 14 – Frogsmore Stew
I woke up this morning thinking about my grocery list and I remembered seeing a shrimp boil recipe in the September issue of Runners World and I thought that this would be perfect for a late summer Saturday afternoon. I mentioned this to Andy and he grinned from ear to ear. He had taken the boys for donuts and while out he thought about how great it would be to have peel and eat shrimp today, but he didn’t want to ask me because he thought that it might be too much trouble. You know what they say…”Great minds think alike!”
The name of this dish (to me) is so unique that I can’t change it so I hope that you enjoy it as much as we did. Frogmore Stew is named after a fishing community on the South Carolina coast. It is a regional specialty severed when fresh shrimp and corn are in season. It is a great mix of protein and carbs. This stew has been added into our rotation and I can’t wait to have Brandie and Laurence over for dinner… Yum Yum!!!
Frogsmore Stew
- 2 medium onions, peeled and quartered
- 4 garlic cloves, smashed
- 1 lemon, halved, plus extra lemon slices
- 1/2 cup seafood seasoning, such as Old Bay
- salt if needed
- 2 pounds of small red potatoes, scrubbed and cut if preferred
- 1 package turkey kielbasa, cut into pieces
- 8 ears of corn, husked and halved (we used 4)
- 2 pounds of shrimp, unpeeled
- melted butter optional
- garlic bread optional
Set a large roasting pan or stock pot over two burners. Add three quarts of water, onions, garlic, seafood seasoning, lemon halves (squeezing their juice into the water before adding the shells), and salt (if needed). Bring to a boil. Add potatoes and kielbasa; return to a boil. Cover with foil which lets some of the liquid evaporate, reduce the heat, and simmer until potatoes are just tender (20 minutes). Add corn; increase heat to medium-high and cook, covered, until tender (5 minutes). Top with shrimp; cover and steam (3 minutes). Turn off the heat; stir shrimp into broth and let stand, covered, until cooked (2 minutes). Serve with melted butter and lemon wedges. Serves 8.

Swim lessons for Matty
We do not have a pool fence, but what we do have is a 1 year old who loves to play outside. Matty is now 20 1/2 months old and 4 months ago we decided it was time to enroll him in swim lessons. One of the first things that they teach the children is how to get out of the pool if they fall in; to find the wall. Speaking of falling in… Matty has slipped in, fell in, been rolled in while driving his car, pushed in…and well if you can name it, it has probably happened. I have had many panic attacks as well as sleepless nights worrying over him and the pool…but that is about to be over soon…
He is taking his swimming lessons at LaFleurs Gymnastics and swim and is currently in a mom and tot class. There have been several occasions where I have not been able to make the lesson so Andy, Courtney, or Papa has stepped in and taken him. He has been learning to kick kick his legs, reach and pull with his arms, dive for the toys, and jump off of the edge (or cannonball as he calls it). Although we are still working on him finding and grabbing the edge, he is pretty good at swimming to people and the steps. Not too much longer and he will be a perfect little swimmer…
Way to go Matty!!!….

End of the Summer Haircuts
After a long and relaxing summer, it is time to get the boys haircuts. We have one more trip to the beach ahead of us and then it will be time for back to school. I have loved their long blong locks, but they are beginning to look like wild children and Matty looks as if he is growing a mullet. So…so long summer hair and hello fresh, clean, and cut hair…

Wk 13 – BLT Tomatoes
We love BLT’s and over the years we have seen the traditional BLT done many different ways… This recipe comes from the September 2010 Food Network magazine and is a healthier alternative to the sandwich that we love so much….
BLT Tomatoes
- 4 Tomatoes
- 4 Bacon slices
- 1 garlic clove
- 1/2 cup chopped lettuce
- 1/2 cup chopped stale bread cubes
- 2 Tbl mayonnaise
- salt and pepper
Preheat the over to 425 degrees. Hollow out 4 tomatoes. Season with salt and pepper and invert to drain. Cook 4 slices of bacon with 1 garlic clove; chop, then toss with 1/2 cup chopped lettuce, 1/2 cup chopped stale bread cubes, 2 tablespoons mayonnaise and salt and pepper. Stuff into the tomatoes, then brush with the bacon drippings. Bake for 20-30 minutes.
