Day Trip to Gwynn’s Island

Being in Richmond and so close to Uncle John, I just had to take the boys out to Gywnn’s Island to visit for the day.  It was short notice, but we were fortunate enough to make it work and an added bonus…Susan came out to spend a couple of hours with us too.  Colin and Emma joined us for the day, and boy did they all have a good time!

Justice the dog couldn’t resist a good swim with the kids…

Davy and Colin on the lookout…

The poor little apple tree that Matty and Emma picked all of Ms. Penny’s apples off of…

Susan grilled us all hot dogs for lunch…they were delicious!

Emma looking at the butterflies…

Matty, Davy, Cousin Susan, and Uncle John Dixon…

I love this photo!

On our way off the island, we stopped into the local seafood shop and bought some fresh crabmeat to make crab cakes…Yum Yum!!!

GA Day 3 – Toccoa River Tubing, Mining, and Hiking

We started our day by stopping at Mercer Orchards.  They are one of the largest orchards in the area and known for their “u-picking” and different jams, jellies, and butters.  Currently, they were picking strawberries and the blueberries were expected to be ready by the end of the week…so we decided to pass and instead browsed through their gift shop.  We bought some old-fashioned peach butter and some peach butter with honey.  On the way back to the truck, Andy noticed that we had a flat tire.  Uh oh!  So, he ended up calling AAA and waiting while the boys and I went on a tractor ride through the orchards.  We saw apple trees, peach trees, cherry trees, pecan trees, strawberry plants, blueberry bushes and more.  By the time we got back the tire was changed and we were on our way!

From here we drove over to McCaysville to go tubing.  We found a company that didn’t have a minimum age requirement, perfect for Matty.  It seems that most of them require that the children be 5, but Matty is awesome and can do anything!  The Toccoa River Adventures offered floats for $6 per person, cheap outdoor fun!  We decided on the short float which was about and hour and forty five minutes.  The boys had a great time.  The water was cold, but not to cold…. Andy and Matty even braved it in to do a little swimming.

For lunch we headed back to Blue Ridge and ate at Blue Ridge Mountain BBQ.  It is another walk up BBQ place that has a lot to offer and delicious food.  After lunch we promised Davy that we would take him mining for gems.  That was his one request on this trip, so of course we had to find a place.  Right off of the main street there was a place called Huck’s Lost Mine.  The large buckets were $25 and it came with a round of mini golf for two.  The bucket was packed full of treasures and the boys had a great time playing in the mud.  We wandered over to the ice cream shop and then took off south for a quick hike at Fall Branch Falls to end the day.

The hike was only about a quarter-mile and it let you walk right up to the waterfall.  At the bottom of the hike, across a small field, there’s access to the creek for the kids to play in.

Blueberry Picking For Muffins

I have decided that for Easter we need  blueberry muffins.  It is officially blueberry picking season, so I load the boys up in the truck and take them over to Blue Youth Berry Farms.  The berries are huge this year and I know that I had better pick a lot because Andy will be all in the bag trying to eat them once I bring them home :)…

A Beach Day With Our Cousins

Sarah and the boys are down visiting for spring break and Easter, so today (Good Friday) we decided to take them fishing on the pier at Anna Maria and then spend the day playing on the beach.

We fished for about an hour, only two of the four poles were working and for whatever reason we only caught two fish.  The first one I caught with in seconds of tossing in my line, and the second one Charlie caught.  He was so proud.  The bravest of the five boys was Emmett.  He liked to pet the fish.

After fishing we decided to walk over to Two Scoops for some lunch.  We figured it would just be easier to eat lunch now and then not worry about having to bring them in off of the beach.  Hot dogs and ice cream all around!

I have to say this was one of the windiest days I have ever seen here.  The day was beautiful, but we laughed saying that if we didn’t get sunburned then we would definitely get wind burned.  Liam, Davy and Charlie surfed the waves for hours, while Matty and Emmett played in the surf and dug in the sand.

Sarah and I layed on the sheet, drank Malibu buckets from the Sandbar, and took turns chasing the boys back down the beach when they drifted off to far.

The last thing the boys did before we left was to all get together and dig a big hole.  We loved watching them play together….  Much love for them.  🙂

Strawberry Festival 2012

Last year, I had decided to make it a tradition that one day during the week of the Strawberry Festival I would surprise the boys and check them out of school early to head off to Plant City and play.  Friday, March 2nd seemed just as good as any…so that was our day.  I showed up at Davy’s school at 1:15 wearing my cowboy hat and he just knew the moment he saw me.  Mom agreed to meet us there at 2pm, so we had plenty of time and Davy got to change in the car.

Now, the thing that we learned this year and will do different next year is that Monday-Thursday they have an all you can ride wrist band for $20.  Matty is tall enough now to ride half of the rides at the festival and Davy is tall enough to ride 90% of them.  Needless to say, we spent a lot of money.  We were also under the impression from last year that they boys could only ride the rides on one side of the festival (we assumed it was the kiddie section), but it turns out that they can ride them all over.  More fun for them.

Both boys got to play darts as well as try to win some fish.  All together we won four.

Next, they rode a couple of roller coasters and Davy rode his first big boy ride, the Hang glider…

After we were done riding, we walked through the cattle and stopped at a seal show on the way out.  It started to rain so we ran for cover near the exit….but no trip is complete without the cowboy hat.  Aren’t they so cute!

Both boys crashed on the way home….  Love them.  🙂

A Day At The Beach With Matty

Some days I just need to spend a little one on one time with one of my love bugs.  Matty skipped preschool today to spend the day with me at Fort De Soto Beach.  We picked up lunch at Subway in Terra Verde and picnicked at the playground on the North Beach.  Matty ran and played.  He even made friends with a man by the name of Mr. Martin who was fishing for speckled trout.  Matty showed him how well he swims and the man showed him his ‘live shrimp’ and fish when he caught them.  We had so much fun and of course the weather was beautiful…love him!

Argggh! Its a Pirate Invasion…

This year we decided to take it easy for Gasparilla and we drove down right before the parade started.  We parked at the corner of Morrison and Armenia, loaded the kids up in the wagon, and wandered down to Bayshore and hunted a place to set up.   There were some nice people who let the kids down on the fence and they were challenged to get 100 strings of beads and then in return they would be rewarded with light up wands.  During the break between the parade and the fireworks we took the kids to Bella’s for dinner.  The pasta and salad were delicious.  The evening ended with beautiful fireworks and a bunch of very tired kids.  It was a great day… 🙂

BJ Reece Apple Orchard

After we left the festival we decided to take the boys to pick some apples.  They love to pick blueberries, so we thought that this would be fun too.  Davy just finished an apple lesson in school, Johnny Appleseed, so perfect timing.  There were quite a few different orchards that we could choose from, BJ’s seemed to have the largest crowd.  We figured if everyone else wanted to go there, then we should too.

Now, I have heard of a lot of things, but what I have never heard of is fried pies.  Andy is our pie eater in the family and his eyes were huge.  When we got up to the counter, they had every kind of pie imaginable.  Apple, cherry, chocolate, cream cheese, peach, pecan, etc.  Yum!  Of course we had to sample a few of them.

And they are off into the orchard to find us some trees that are full of apples…

What!!!  How dare you throw apples at mama!!!  Silly boys…

The apples all over the ground is what surprised me the most.  What a waste.  Matty liked to pick them up and bite into them, then he would throw it down and pick up another…  No stopping the bear….

What did we do with all of our apples you ask???  We brought them home, back to Florida, and made apple jelly.  Yum!

Church St. Armands and Fishing

August 7:  Sunday

It is a beautiful Sunday here on the island for the family to spend together, so we took the boys the church for a little worship.  The Roser Memorial Church was built 1913 by Charles Roser as a memorial to his wife Caroline.  He had decided that since so many people came to visit the island that it would not be given to any denomination, but would stand as a house of union for worship.  The original church still stands and is beautiful.  The people were friendly and the boy had a great time in Sunday School.

For lunch we headed down to St. Armand’s circle.  Andy and I always have a craving for Tommy Bahama’s when we head this way.  He loves the cheeseburger and I love the Ahi Tuna Poke…yum!

After walking through the shops, the boys were so good that we treated them to ice cream and promised to stop at the Long Boat Key playground on the way back.  It was a pretty park and we had it all to ourselves.

As we crossed back over to Bradenton Beach, we decided to drive down Bridge Street to see what was there.  We’ve passed by here so many times, but we had never stopped to check it out.  What did we find???  Minigolf!  It was so hot out, but Davy loved showing us his golf moves and at the end the boys got to drop their ball into a Plinko game and Matty won a free round next time we came back.

For the evening activity, the daddy’s decided to take the boys fishing.  They all climbed into the back of the truck and told stories about who was going to catch the whopper fish of the day.

Everyone caught a fish today and we celebrated with Two Scoops Ice Cream…

The Strawberry Festival

One of my favorite childhood pastimes was to go to the Strawberry Festival.  This huge local festival is hosted in Plant City every spring and the weather is always gorgeous.  Andy and I had decided early on that this festival would become a tradition for our boys.  We would randomly pick a day and then surprise them by showing up to school and checking them out for early release.  Davy went once when he was younger, but he didn’t remember it and Matty has never been.

Mom came along to join us today and help me out with the boys.  She met us at the gate 1 entrance and as we walked in I just loved watching Davy’s reaction.  He immediately spotted the cowboys hats and I just smiled to myself.  Right after Andy and I started dating, we went to the festival on one of his weekend visits and he bought a cowboy hat (his first cowboy hat) and said it was because I always said that I wanted to marry a cowboy.  How cute is he. :O)  I promised Davy that we would pick up a couple on our way out.

To the left of the festival, or on the east side, they had the little children’s rides…so that’s where we headed.  I asked Davy which one he wanted to ride first and he smiled from ear to ear and pointed to the ferris wheel.

From there both boys wandered through the rides, riding as many as they could.  We were lucky because the height requirement for most of them was 36 inches.  Matty just barely hit that mark.  Other rides were the train, fun house, the carousel, the swings, four wheelers, bumper boats, trucks, helicopters, the giant slide, and the spinning strawberries.

After we were done riding the rides it was time to indulge in some festival food.  No trip to the Strawberry Festival would be complete without some strawberry shortcake loaded down with whipped cream.  Some other foods that we had were bacon dipped in chocolate, cotton candy, and fresh squeezed lemonade.  Outside the shortcake tent was this “grandpa puppet”, Matty thought that he was so funny.

Over at the midway Davy won three fish and both boys won stuffed toys by throwing darts.

As we ended our day at the festival, like promised we stopped at the hat booth to pick up a few cowboy hats.  Aren’t my boys just the cutest…if I do say so myself!  :O)
