Winter break is officially over and the boys are back to school today.  Usually we don’t need to set the alarm, but today I did and I am so glad because I was knocked out cold.  The boys got up and out the door pretty quickly, it was all much easier than I thought it would be.  We’ll see how they are by Wednesday :).  Davy was super excited to see his friends, when I asked him what his friends got for Christmas he proudly announced “Slushie Machines!”  Andy and I would like to know who is the genius that markets this because every kid we know got one from Santa, including ours!  Our evening routine has returned and here is a picture of Davy doing his homework right after we got home.

It’s the first Sunday of the new year and there is no other way to start it than to listen to the voices of our beautiful choir sing Handel’s Messiah – Hallelujah Chorus.  It has been tradition at Idlewild to sing this the first Sunday in January for years and years, and every year I look forward to it.  So beautiful.

The rest of the day we watched football, cleaned, and spent time getting ready to start the week tomorrow.  I captured this picture of Matty today.  My friend Nichole was doing a little spring cleaning and her boys are all older now and have moved past the train phase, so she packed up all of her train toys and brought them over for Matty.  As you can see they never made it past the foyer and up the stairs.  We figured, “why not!” and decided to let him play with them down here for a while.  🙂

Pastor Ken started off with this scripture this morning:

‘Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Matt 5:16’

Let the light shine baby….let it shine!

It’s a lazy Saturday…one of my favorite kinds.  We slept in, ate a little lunch, and then headed out to St. Pete beach to spend the day Brandie, Laurence, Ryla, and Layne.  We stopped off at the beach and hunted down a cache.  It was hidden right off of the board walk in a tree, it really was a great spot.  After that we headed over to the condo. The boys swam in the pool for a couple of hours while we lounged, ate guacamole, and drank cocktails.  We walked down to the little beach, the kids played in the sand and climbed on the rocks, and then we headed back to the condo for dinner.  They had previously stopped off at Mazzaro’s for dinner items, so we ate and drank like Italian kings.  We loved getting to spend the day with them….  Wish we could do it more often!  Thanks for dinner B – we love you!

It is dark and drizzly here and I think the high was 59 degrees.  Anything that we decided to do today would have to be indoors.  In the morning we drove out to Parksdale to get some produce, it is officially strawberry season and the boys were excited for milk shakes, afterwards we went to Publix for our weekly shopping trip.  At 12:30 Matty went on a playdate over to Gavin’s house.  He played for two hours while Davy played here with Caiden.  I curled up with Karen White’s new book ‘After the Rain’ (thank you dad for my birthday present) and enjoyed a nice quiet afternoon.  For dinner I cooked a pesto vegetable pizza, we ate it along with some ham, and it was yummy!

We have the most wonderful friends ever!!!  Most everyone knows that the Zahn’s have been ill so, I was super excited when my friend Catie texts me on Tuesday to say that she is going to bring over dinner on Thursday.  Although we are better, we are still tired, coughing, and not 100%.  This meal is perfect:  A huge beautiful spiral cut ham, homemade mac-n-cheese, a salad mixed with apples, craisins, feta and almonds, green beans tossed with dressing, sun-dried tomatoes, bacon, and feta, chocolate cake, and diet coke.  Does she know me or what??!!  Thank you Catie….Love you!

photo (1)Today, Davy had the fun lesson of learning about action and consequence.  A few days ago, he comes into my bedroom and holds up his Skylanders game disc and half of it is cracked….broken!  No disc, no game.  So this morning we piled into the car and headed over to Toys R Us to get him a new one.  Caiden had given him a gift card for his birthday, I had a few ‘rewards’ cards lying around, and we had one duplicate Skylander from Christmas that Davy was going to get to swap out for a new one.  Well it turns out that they don’t just sell the disc, you have to buy it as a kit $59.99 (I called GameStop too just to be sure).  As I was talking to Customer Service, the boys run off and each pick out a new Skylander.  Needless to say, I had the fun job of explaining to them that they weren’t getting new ones, the traded one was now going to be used as cash, and that the purchase of the game sucked up all of their money.  It was bitter-sweet for them, so sad to not be getting new ones like they thought, so happy to get the game again.  Oh well, how many times do we have to say….”Take care of your stuff!”

Happy New Years!!!!  It is another beautiful day here in paradise and look at what I started my year off with….gotta love waking up next to this sweet face.  🙂

Still trying to recover from this flu, so Andy kept everyone close to home today. He spent most of his day helping and cleaning around the house and for that I am so grateful.  I made black-eyed pea soup for lunch and for our family outing we piled into the car for a little geocaching.  I got to ride along and they did all of the hunting :).  We found three caches today, two logs and one trinket exchange.  Davy found his first cache today at the Keystone church, it was buried in a little hole in one of the benches at the outside sanctuary.  He was so excited.  Caiden found the last one in the brick path next to the fountain over at Highland Park.  Fun times…

New Years Day and Black Eyed Peas

DSC_0002Most of us who grew up in the south know that eating black-eyed peas on New Years Day is a must, but I found myself this morning asking why…here’s what I found.

The practice of eating black-eyed peas for luck is generally believed to date back to the Civil War. At first planted as food for livestock, and later a food staple for slaves in the South, the fields of black-eyed peas were ignored as Sherman’s troops destroyed or stole other crops, thereby giving the humble, but nourishing, black-eyed pea an important role as a major food source for surviving Confederates.  Today, the tradition of eating black-eyed peas for the New Year has evolved into a number of variations and embellishments of the luck and prosperity theme including:

  • Served with greens (collards, mustard or turnip greens, which varies regionally), the peas represent coins and the greens represent paper money. In some areas cabbage is used in place of the greens.
  • Cornbread, often served with black-eyed peas and greens, represents gold.
  • For the best chance of luck every day in the year ahead, one must eat at least 365 black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day.
  • Black-eyed peas eaten with stewed tomatoes represent wealth and health.
  • In some areas, actual values are assigned with the black-eyed peas representing pennies or up to a dollar each and the greens representing anywhere from one to a thousand dollars.
  • Adding a shiny penny or dime to the pot just before serving is another tradition practiced by some. When served, the person whose bowl contains the penny or dime receives the best luck for the New Year, unless of course, the recipient swallows the coin, which would be a rather unlucky way to start off the year. (In the spirit of being responsible with my little guys, we opted for the large Gasparilla coin instead).

New Years Day Soup

3/4 pound ham fully cooked and chopped or cubed

ham bone

1 medium onion

2 cloves of garlic

2 tablespoons butter

1 can black-eyed peas, drained and rinsed

1 can great northern beans, drained and rinsed

1 can stewed or petite diced tomatoes

3 cups chicken broth

2 cups water

1 cup potato, peeled and diced

3/4 cup carrots diced

3/4 cup celery diced

1/4 teaspoon pepper

1 teaspoon salt

In a 3-5 quart pot, saute ham, bone, onion and garlic in butter until the onion is tender or translucent.  Add all remaining ingredients; cover and simmer for 30 minutes or until veggies are soft.  Serve and cheer for whoever finds the coin… 🙂

Project Life 2013

After Matty was born, the days of trying to keep up with scrapbooking came to a drastic halt.  After many hours of complaining about how bad of a mother I was to not be keeping all of Matty’s little baby details like I did for Davy, Kelly decided that she and I were going to partake in Project Life.  Kelly first introduced me to this project at the end of 2010 and together through motivation and accountability to each other we successfully completed all of 2011.  www.beckyhiggins.com  Project life is just that, a project that captures your day-to-day life.  Becky Higgins created several kits, which was perfect for us.  It came with a binder, monthly tabs, journal cards, and a date stamp.  All we had to do was take the picture, print it, and fill out the daily card.  Looking back, I just love this project.  So many things happen day-to-day that we just forget about or take for granted, such as: the breakfast table, playing on the playground, sleeping on the little bed, losing teeth, etc.  As we rolled into 2012, my photo printer broke and after a while I fell to far behind to try and catch up.  I am filled with sadness that I didn’t get to capture all of the little moments of last year, so my resolution is to not let that happen again this year.

Earlier in the year I found a printing company www.blog2print.com who prints blogs chronologically and at an affordable price.  So that means that this year I will post daily pictures here and then combined with all of our other wonderful adventures I’ll be able to print a book out and the Project will be complete.  I am so excited to see what will unfold this year.  I appreciate those who follow us and for those who receive email posts….consider this a warning… 🙂  Happy New Years!!!

New Years Eve 2012

Davy loves New Year’s Eve.  He talks about it year round.  So this year without the Carothers and Krulik families here we knew that we would have to make it extra fun for him.  We talked about burning the Christmas tree in the fire pit like last year, but then decided to just buy a big pack of fireworks instead.  They were so cute, the sun had barely set and they were grabbing us to go outside.  Dan, Debbie, and Andrea came outside to watch the fun.

Matty lasted until about 9 and Davy made it until 11…he tried.  At 11:45 we woke them up, toasted with some bubbly, and watched the ball drop to bring in the new year.  This is mine and Andy’s 15th New Years together…love him.
