The Last Day of Pre-K

It’s Davy’s last day as a Pre-Ker…. Sniff Sniff….

As always, on the last day of school at Berkeley they have what is called Farmers Day, otherwise known as a field day. The students are always divided into one of two teams: blue or white. Davy was on the white team. We dropped him off at normal time and then returned at 10:15 for the end of the year classroom party. The kids were so excited. They made a few crafts and of course ate some candy. At 11am the party ended and so did their school year. The last day of school is the only half day that the children get all year. He told his friends to have a nice summer, gave Ms. Fruit a giant hug and a thank you, waved goodbye from the classroom door, and we were off.

Congratulations to my big guy…he is now a Kindergartener!!!!

On the first day of school I got a great picture of Davy with his friend Ryan and I was hoping to get a picture of them on last day of school as well… You can see that they had no interest in posing for me… :O)

We stopped at TGIFriday’s for a celebratory lunch. Davy is eating an ice cream Oreo sandwich…Yum!

Oatmeal Scotchies for the Cookie Extravaganza

Every year the Berkeley parents come together to say “Thank you” to the teachers and staff by having a Cookie Extravaganza.

The request is for volunteers to bake six dozen cookies and to make anything other than chocolate chip. So, we decided to make Oatmeal Scotchies. Of course I had to enlist my little chef to help me, he loves to cook and this is a perfect way for him to say “Thank you” to Mrs. Fruit, Ms. Michiel’s, and his other teachers….

Oatmeal Scotchies

1 cup unsalted butter chopped
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3 cups rolled oats (I use Quaker Old Fashioned, do not use instant)
1 package of butterscotch chips

Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 375 degrees.

In bowl of electric mixer or by hand, beat butter until creamy. Add sugars; beat until fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in eggs and vanilla; beat until well combined.

In a separate bowl combine flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. Gradually mix into butter mixture with wooden spoon or large rubber spatula until just combined. Stir in oats and butterscotch chips.

Drop the dough by heaped tablespoons onto ungreased baking sheet, leaving at least a 2 inch gap between each mound. Place one baking sheet at a time onto center rack of preheated 375 degree oven. For softer chewy cookies; bake until very lightly browned, about 7 to 8 minutes. For crisper cookies; bake until golden brown, about 9-10 minutes. Cool on a baking sheet for at least two minutes before transferring to a place to finish cooling.

(I found that in my oven the cookies were the best at around 8 1/2 minutes. )

Makes about 48 cookies.

To make bar Cookies: grease a 10×15 inch jelly roll pan. Spread cookie dough in prepared pan. Bake until light golden brown, about 18-22 minutes. Cool completely in pan on a wire rack before cutting into bars.

Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week. Cookies freeze well.

Davy’s Pre-K Halloween Parade

Every year the lower division at Berkeley hosts an annual Halloween Costume Parade. The children line up in their classes by grade and parade around the mound to fun spooky music. After all of the grades have entered, each one is presented to the parents for photo opportunities and then they parade out. Here are all the children in Ms. Fruit’s class… Afterwards, the children get to have a special party in their room…. But of course, no parents allowed…

We continued our exploration of shapes during “R” week. For this project, the children were able to choose from a wide variety of shapes cut from rainbow material. Now, of course my eyes whelled up with pride that he made a picture about his family…so I had to add it to their blog. Andy and I had a quick joke between the two of us wondering who was the person on the left with the glaring orange eyes, until we asked Davy and he said, “That’s you Daddy!” When we asked why they were orange he simply stated, “Because I like orange.” If we had looked a little closer we also would have noticed that Andy was the only one who didn’t have any hair. How cute it that! So, Andy asks Davy why he was on the left side by himself and Davy’s response was, “Well Daddy, you can just walk on over!”

Davy’s First Day of Pre-K at Berkeley Prep

It’s been what feels like a long time coming, but today Davy started school. Some might argue that he is only in Pre-K, that school starts next year in Kindergarten…but Andy and I feel like next year really isn’t going to be any different from this year: same school, same uniform, classrooms are next door to this years, and so on…so it’s official! Davy had his first day of school today! I was very proud of myself…I didn’t cry once!

We took these pictures at home on our front porch. It was pouring rain this morning but nothing could have stopped our little sunshine. He was so excited to go to “The Pirate School”….

As we entered Davy’s new classroom at school, he was met by his teacher Mrs. Fruit and the classroom helper Ms. Michiels. Ms. Michiels reminded Davy where to hang his snack bag and his book bag, showed him again where his desk was, and then sent him off to play. In the morning before circle time at 8am, they have the choice of reading books, coloring, or doing puzzles.

His school day runs from 8-2:45 and afterwards on days that I am working he goes to BEEP (Berkeley Educational Enrichment Program). Since it rained all day, he was in the classroom verses on the playground. He was very excited to see me, have his friend Ryan say hi to me, and to tell me about his day. In the parking lot on the way to our car we ran into Mrs. Fruit and she gave Davy one more hug to end his day…
