Currahee Mountain and Helen, Ga

Bright and early we headed out this morning, excited for a full day of exploring.  Of course we had to stop at Starbucks first for some coffee, and it was there that they directed us to Big Bear Cafe for breakfast, a local mom and pop place.  This restaurant is located next to the train station and you know that you are in a small town when you walk in and half of the people in there say “Good Morning”.  Breakfast was cheap and delicious and I think that Andy had some of the best cheesy hash browns I have ever had…yum!

After our bellies were full, we drove over to Toccoa, Ga to see the famous Currahee Mountain.  Andy has been talking about this mountain since we saw the first episode of Band of Brothers when the soldiers were in training.  Here’s a little history tidbit… In 1942 the 506th Parachute Infantry received their training at the foot of Currahee and began each day by running 3 miles up the mountain and 3 miles back down. The regimental patch that they wore had the word Currahee and an outline of the mountain on it. There battle cry was “Currahee”. Boys who became Men and Brothers in war, as a result of their training in this unit, were from all walks of life and all parts of the United States.  Every year they have a race to the top of the mountain and back and every year Andy asks me if I want to run it.

We stopped at the Military Museum first.  Just Andy and Davy went through the museum, Matty and I played outside; he needed to do a little running.  We wandered into the gift shop and then set off to drive to the top of the mountain.  It was a slow dirt road, but the views were beautiful.

After we left the mountain, we headed west towards Helen.  I have been hearing about this town for years but have never had the opportunity to visit it…so this trip is the perfect opportunity.

Helen is a unique town in that it is a re-creation of an alpine village.  It is complete with cobblestone alleys, old-world towers, buildings that have gingerbread trim, and scenes painted throughout of Bavaria and North Georgia.  One of the things that it is most known for is that it has the longest running Oktoberfest in the country; running from September 22 to October 30.  “Oktoberfest you say???” and Andy was in.

There is really only one road in and out of Helen and the traffic was not fun at all.  We stopped to get some cash, and decided that the bank drive through teller was just as good as anywhere to park, so we did.  We did one quick walk through of the town and then decided to put our name on the wait list at the troll tavern and restaurant.  While we waited the boys played in the river and we settled in with an ice-cold draft beer.  For lunch, there really wasn’t any other option…we had to go with the combo wurst platter…delicious!  After lunch we wandered around a little more and then decided to head out.  It was unique and fun…but crowded.

Lake House on Lake Lanier

Every year Davy gets Columbus Day and the day after off, which falls around the second week of October and nothing, sounds more fun than heading north to experience a little fall.  Everyone already knows how much he loves the mountains, so a long weekend in cooler weather…sign us up.

Aunt Barbara already had visitors planned at her home this weekend, so last-minute Andy says, “well lets find a place on Lake Lanier and explore new towns at the base of the Smoky Mountains”; so that’s what we did.  We found this little house on VRBO.com and luckily for us it was listed with a last-minute fall special that fell into our price range.  It was a small house, located in Gainesville, Ga, probably around 800 square feet, but it had a loft with two double beds that the boys just loved.  We didn’t spend a lot of time in the house; mostly we were out by 8am and didn’t return until 7ish.  We had planned on doing a little fishing, but there has been a drought in Atlanta and the lake was low, so we changed our mind and decided to do more hiking instead.

Some of the characteristics of the house included: a really steep driveway, a tin roof that banged loudly every time an acorn fell on it (by the way – there were hundreds of acorns and they were the biggest acorns that I have ever seen, between an inch and an inch and a half long) so it sounded like gunfire was going off all night, a huge screened in porch (that we loved and is a must one day in our mountain house), and there was white carpet!  Not sure why the owners would put white carpet in a Lake House…it made me so nervous the entire time.

The boys had a great time.  It was fun watching them share a room and they loved eating outside on the porch.

Eating breakfast on the porch.

JLT Blog – Annie Laurie’s Potato Salad

I recently wrote this for the Junior League Cookbook Blog …..

If you have lived in the Tampa Bay area for any amount of time, then you have most likely ventured over to Tarpon Springs for some local authentic Greek food or wandered into any of the Louis Pappas’ Market Café restaurants throughout town and ordered a Greek Salad.  Have you ever asked yourself, “What is it about this salad that is soooo good and who decided to put the potato salad at the bottom?”

Louis M. Pappamichalopoulos served in France as an army chef in General Pershing’s “Wildcat Division” during World War I. It was there that he created his own version of a Greek salad by adding potato salad to sustain the troops during hard times. Louis Pappas arrived from Greece in 1905 to find opportunity in America.  He and his wife Flora eventually settled in Tarpon Springs in 1925, and established the original Louis Pappas “Riverside Café”. With a handful of employees on sawdust floors, they opened their humble café, specializing in fine Greek-American cuisine and the Louis Pappas Famous Greek Salad. Potato salad at the bottom of a Greek salad soon became commonplace and the salad itself became internationally known. The success of the Louis Pappas Greek Salad has lasted for almost a century where it remains the most popular dish at our Louis Pappas Market Café fast casual restaurants in the Tampa Bay area.

Annie Laurie’s potato salad was recently one of the featured dishes during Gasparilla week at Datz deli.  I am sure for those of you who love the Greek salad that after one bite you were smiling from ear to ear.  I have never given much thought as to what the secret ingredient might be for this ever so delicious potato salad, and was completely surprised to realize that it is the wine vinegar.  Now, this makes complete sense considering that it is also an ingredient in the Louis Pappas Greek Salad dressing.

If you choose to make this potato salad for loved one, friends, or guests…be prepared to be asked to make it again.  It is delicious and a  great compliment to almost any dish…but most especially the Greek Salad.  Thank you grandfather Louis Pappas! Bon Appétit!

Annie Laurie’s Potato Salad for Greek Salad

  • 2 pounds medium Idaho potatoes
  • 1 large sweet onion, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons wine vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup of mayonnaise

Boil unpeeled potatoes in unsalted water.  While potatoes are cooking soak chopped onion in the vinegar.  When potatoes are done, cool slightly and peel, then cut in slices and cut the slices in half.  Add onion and vinegar mixture to still-warm potatoes.  Sprinkle in the salt and mix in the mayonnaise.

Herb Dip

I recently wrote this for the Junior League Cookbook Blog…

With football season officially in full swing, I can’t think of a more opportune time for each of you to grab The Gasparilla Cookbook and seek out a perfect dip on which to snack.  It doesn’t matter if you are watching a game by yourself or having a large group of people over…there is something here for everyone.  The dips can be found on pages 8-13 and there are 15 different recipes from which to choose.

The Herb Dip recipe was provided by Mrs. Glen Evins and is just delicious.  This recipe is versatile in that it can be used at just about any function, party, or get together.  Just think about the endless opportunities:  a fall table, a spring table, 4th of July picnic, a baby shower, a football game, it doesn’t matter…it’s perfect.

Most of these ingredients you’ll probably find in your kitchen, but if not they are easily accessible at the grocery store.  Who knows…if you love the dip as much as we do, you may just decide to start your own herb garden!  Enjoy…and Bon Appétit!

Herb Dip

  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 8-ounce package cream cheese
  • 1 tablespoon chives, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon each minced onion, tarragon, dill, soy, and curry powder
  • Dash of Worcestershire sauce
  • Dash Tabasco
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Enough cream to soften dip

Combine all ingredients and blend well.

Little Matty Gets Tubes

After many months of debating whether or not to get tubes in Matty’s ears, we finally decided it was time.  One to many infections and one to many antibiotics….  So at 6:40 am we pulled into University Community Hospital’s One Day Surgery Center so we could help Matty get better.  Andy had to take Davy to school, so he didn’t arrive until right after Matty went in.  Here is Matty sitting in triage wearing his little hospital gown with Tigers on it.

We didn’t have to wait to long, only about 30 minutes, and then Dr. Patel comes out into the waiting room to get us.  He said that he also removed his adenoids; they were very inflamed which was also preventing the ears from draining and the antibiotic from penetrating the infections in the ear.  He has really high hopes that things are going to improve greatly.

There was a chair directly next to his bed and we both thought that it would be best if Andy was sitting there when Matty woke up so he would be the first thing that Matty saw, afterall…Andy is his favorite.  When Matty finally woke, he looked around, saw Andy and scowled.  Although he never cried, he was outright mad at him.  So mad it was funny to us because Andy didn’t do anything at all and I was the one who brought him here.  He looked at him, looked at me, and then threw his arms out and said, “MAMA!”  So sweet.

We stayed about an hour after he woke up, and then we headed for home.  I stopped to get him his pain medicine…but couldn’t wait to get him in bed with me to snuggle up.  I hope you feel better soon little Matty Bear!!!….

Davy’s First Day of Kindergarten

The big day is finally here!  It’s one of those moments that you talk about for years, and before you know it…. wow it’s here!  Davy is starting Kindergarten.  It wasn’t as overwhelming to us as we had anticipated; after all, last year really was his starting year at Berkeley.  As we climbed out of bed, ate breakfast, got dressed, and headed out the door…it was just like any other school day…

Except… what was easily forgotten about… the 6:40 wake up.  Ugh…  Rise and Shine babies.  To start off the school year, we all sat down for a big chocolate chip pancake breakfast.

After breakfast, we took Davy outside to stand on the front porch for the annual “First Day of School Photos.”

This year Davy gets to bring his own backpack.  So, over the summer I tore out all the backpack pictures that I could find in the different catalogues that come in the mail, laid them out on the table, and let him pick which one he wanted.  He decided on a lime green Lands End Kids backpack with two logos: his name and a pirate patch.

Usually, the morning drop off routine is to go through the car line, but there was no way that we were going to let him go off to Kindergarten without us :O).  We parked the car and as we walked onto the campus we were greeted with the sound of bagpipes…

The first car sitting in the car line was Sophia’s, so we invited her to walk in with us…the children were so excited.

Each child has a designated hook outside of the classroom to hang their backpack, here’s Davy’s…

Good Morning Mrs. Lewis!!!

The Friday before school started, the last day of summer, the school opened the Spirit Shop and invited the children to come in and see their classrooms.  We already had plans to spend the day with Caiden at the beach so we missed coming in and participating in an activity.  Mrs. Lewis was kind enough to let us into the classroom a little early this morning so Davy could find his desk and run through a scavenger hunt with Sophia.

Davy was completely at ease and so excited to see his friends… so with heavy hearts full of love and pride we kissed him goodbye and left.  Our baby is a Kindergartener.

Mrs. Lewis send out a “First Day of School” digital scrapbook and here are a few of fun things that Davy did on his first day:

Fine Arts with Ms. Ansinelli

Spanish with Senora Calladrino

Dance Party with Mrs. Lewis

Church St. Armands and Fishing

August 7:  Sunday

It is a beautiful Sunday here on the island for the family to spend together, so we took the boys the church for a little worship.  The Roser Memorial Church was built 1913 by Charles Roser as a memorial to his wife Caroline.  He had decided that since so many people came to visit the island that it would not be given to any denomination, but would stand as a house of union for worship.  The original church still stands and is beautiful.  The people were friendly and the boy had a great time in Sunday School.

For lunch we headed down to St. Armand’s circle.  Andy and I always have a craving for Tommy Bahama’s when we head this way.  He loves the cheeseburger and I love the Ahi Tuna Poke…yum!

After walking through the shops, the boys were so good that we treated them to ice cream and promised to stop at the Long Boat Key playground on the way back.  It was a pretty park and we had it all to ourselves.

As we crossed back over to Bradenton Beach, we decided to drive down Bridge Street to see what was there.  We’ve passed by here so many times, but we had never stopped to check it out.  What did we find???  Minigolf!  It was so hot out, but Davy loved showing us his golf moves and at the end the boys got to drop their ball into a Plinko game and Matty won a free round next time we came back.

For the evening activity, the daddy’s decided to take the boys fishing.  They all climbed into the back of the truck and told stories about who was going to catch the whopper fish of the day.

Everyone caught a fish today and we celebrated with Two Scoops Ice Cream…

AMI Saturday Fun

August 6: Saturday

We love the weekends!  So much to do and see….  We started our day today down at the Holmes Beach public beach for breakfast.  We had heard about their all you can eat pancake breakfast and that sounds perfect for the boys.

After breakfast we loaded up the beach gear and decided to spend the rest of the morning at Bean Point.  We knew that the beaches were going to be crowded, so we thought that we might get lucky here since it is a little more private and secluded. The kids played in the kayak and on the paddleboard. We even went for a walk around the north point. The tide was out and the view was beautiful. The kids were even rewarded with a finding a starfish.
To end the day, we moved over to the west side to watch the sunset. The weather was beautiful and we were rewarded with sand dollars. :O)

Amanda and her family came out to spend the day with us.

Mote Aquarium

August 4: Thursday

To break up our day trips to the beach, we decided to take the kids down to the Mote Aquarium in Sarasota.  It was our first time visiting this aquarium and surprisingly it was bigger than I expected.  What I didn’t expect was how much of it was going to be outside!  Late morning in August… in Florida… and then there was the long walk from one building to the next.  Ugh…  However, the kids really enjoyed it and the Manatees were adorable.  For lunch we crossed the street to go to the Salty Dog and to wrap up the day we found it fitting to have ‘Movie Night’ with the movie Oceans.

Baby Ryla looking at the fish…

Pacific Moon Jellyfish.

LOOK!!!  There’s Bruce!!!!

While the kids were watching their movie…us grown-ups went out for date night.  We took the golf cart over to the Beach House and enjoyed the company, ambiance, and cocktails.  :O)
