The First Week of 1st Grade and EP3

It was the first day of school and our boys were ready to go!  The night before we laid out their clothes, packed their bags, and went to bed early because we all knew that 6:30am was going to be here before we knew it.  Most of the summer the boys were getting up between 7-7:30, so this transition wouldn’t be too hard on them.  For breakfast they gobbled down some pancakes with syrup and whipped cream and a big glass of OJ.  With their bellies full, they got dressed, and we headed outside for our traditional in front of the house photo.  Although I laid the camera out early hoping that the lens would adjust to the August humidity, it didn’t so a few of them are cloudy.  Oh well, I’d rather have cloudy pictures instead of no pictures.  🙂

Davy is now officially a first grader.  His teacher is Mrs. McElroy.  Matty is in a Preschool 3 class called EP3 and his teacher is Ms. Adkins.  Neither one of them seemed nervous, sad, nor anxious…just excited!  We loaded into the car and off we went for drop off!

This year instead of walking Davy in, we let him jump out of the car from the car line just like the other older kids.  He was happy.

We walked Matty into his new class.  He too did a really good job.  I expected him to be a little clingy, instead I think that he was just excited.  We kissed him good bye and we were off!

Davy’s teacher shared some photos from throughout the week… Looks like everyone is have a wonderful time.

First grade boys on Friday’s officially have to dress in a blazer and tie, doesn’t Davy look so handsome…

Here’s to a wonderful year!

Little Matty Bear Breaks His Arm

It is the end of the evening for the Carother’s family going away party and Andy comes out the front door with little Matty bear laying in his arms and he says to me, “He hurt himself.”  He sat him on my lap for a few minutes and Matty didn’t even move, he just held onto his arm and it hurt.  He couldn’t tell us where it hurt, just that it hurt all over and if you tried to move his arm he would begin to violently shake.  Deep down, we both knew that he broke it.  So, we told all our neighbors that we needed to go and they quickly helped us pack everything up.  Jenni and David were here and we laid Matty down on Papa’s lap while we got ready to go and he fell asleep.  We found this really strange because it wasn’t even 8 o’clock yet.

We decided to take him to Pediatric Afterhours over in Palm Harbor.  Even though they weren’t crowded, we still ended up being there a couple of hours.  They x-rayed his arm a half-dozen different ways, but they couldn’t find the break.  They even x-rayed Bruce.  The only indication that it was broken, was that the fat pads around the elbow were inflamed.  This told us where the injury was, just not how bad it was.  Now we also understood why Matty couldn’t tell us exactly where it hurt.  He would point above his elbow, below his elbow, and in general all around the middle of his arm.  They splinted him up and sent us on our way.  Matty slept with us that night and every night for the next week. 😦

The next morning I called into Pediatric Orthopedics affiliated with All Children’s and St. Joes, and lucky for us they were able to squeeze us in at the Tampa location right before lunch.  At the appointment, they removed the splint and took him for another x-ray.  This time they only needed to do one.  There it was, right through the elbow.  You can see it in the middle of the x-ray, it looks like a gray shaded upside down hockey stick.  The fat pads are also still visible.

Off we went into the casting room.  Of course we paid for the waterproof one.  Matty picked green as his color.  No surprise there.  He didn’t cry when they wrapped him up, you could tell though that he was uncomfortable with them touching it.

Matty smiling because they are all done.

That night we are at home and Emma is wanting to play.  The doctor told Matty no playgrounds, parks, running, sandbox, beach, etc.  He got upset and cried.  Well, when he cries he always covers his face with his hands and the cast scraped the skin right off.  Bad day for our little buddy.

Three weeks pass by and we head back in for our follow-up.  Although Matty never complained about his cast, he was a really good sport about it, you can’t fake the happiness that he showed when the man was cutting it off.  They took another x-ray and gave us the all clear to go thumbs up!  The doctor told us to expect him to be stiff and sore for at least a week, but that we should just give him Tylenol for the pain and it would work itself out.  He has to wait a week before he can play on the playground….but that doesn’t mean we can’t go to the beach!

A Day At The Beach With Matty

Some days I just need to spend a little one on one time with one of my love bugs.  Matty skipped preschool today to spend the day with me at Fort De Soto Beach.  We picked up lunch at Subway in Terra Verde and picnicked at the playground on the North Beach.  Matty ran and played.  He even made friends with a man by the name of Mr. Martin who was fishing for speckled trout.  Matty showed him how well he swims and the man showed him his ‘live shrimp’ and fish when he caught them.  We had so much fun and of course the weather was beautiful…love him!

Happy 3d Birthday To You Matty Bear

Matty found a Mickey Pirate Ship in his bed this morning when he woke up, and both of the boys were up bright and early playing…  Andy and I climbed out of bed and greeted them with smiles.  We sang Happy Birthday and I pulled out the pan to make him a big plate of chocolate chip pancakes.  These pancakes are special for the boys because we don’t usually give them chocolate for breakfast, I love to watch them squeal with delight.

Next up, Matty had his doctor’s appointment.  He weighed in at 34 pounds and is 38.5 inches tall.  He is a healthy boy.  Afterwards, I took him to two different parks to play.  He loves to play outside.

I asked him what he wanted for his birthday night, and he asked for brownies.  So with our hats on and our friends all here…we sang to Matty bear and watched him blow out his candle…  Here’s to number 3!  Love you baby!

Little Matty Gets Tubes

After many months of debating whether or not to get tubes in Matty’s ears, we finally decided it was time.  One to many infections and one to many antibiotics….  So at 6:40 am we pulled into University Community Hospital’s One Day Surgery Center so we could help Matty get better.  Andy had to take Davy to school, so he didn’t arrive until right after Matty went in.  Here is Matty sitting in triage wearing his little hospital gown with Tigers on it.

We didn’t have to wait to long, only about 30 minutes, and then Dr. Patel comes out into the waiting room to get us.  He said that he also removed his adenoids; they were very inflamed which was also preventing the ears from draining and the antibiotic from penetrating the infections in the ear.  He has really high hopes that things are going to improve greatly.

There was a chair directly next to his bed and we both thought that it would be best if Andy was sitting there when Matty woke up so he would be the first thing that Matty saw, afterall…Andy is his favorite.  When Matty finally woke, he looked around, saw Andy and scowled.  Although he never cried, he was outright mad at him.  So mad it was funny to us because Andy didn’t do anything at all and I was the one who brought him here.  He looked at him, looked at me, and then threw his arms out and said, “MAMA!”  So sweet.

We stayed about an hour after he woke up, and then we headed for home.  I stopped to get him his pain medicine…but couldn’t wait to get him in bed with me to snuggle up.  I hope you feel better soon little Matty Bear!!!….

Matty’s Big Boy Bed

So last weekend Andy and I got up, flipped on the coffee pot, and then we heard “Hi Daddy”.  Little Matty had climbed out of his crib.  Now, about a year ago he started climbing out, and we were fine with that….but day after day he kept getting up earlier and earlier and that just wasn’t going to work.  So Andy and I ended up turning his crib around putting the high back in the front, pushing it against the corner of the wall, and then pushing his armoire up against the other side.  Now the front was to tall and both of his sides were blocked.  You may be thinking “how high could the back of the crib actually be?”, and well lets just say that I had to stand on one of the kids stools and then drop him over the edge.  I always felt horrible dropping him in, but he thought it was funny and would laugh.

We decided it was time.  We packed the kids up in the truck and went to buy Matty’s bed.  Matty was so excited!  I don’t even know how to describe how excited he has been all week while we were converting his room.  He loves the color blue (even if half the time he calls it purple), so we picked out a nice bright color to paint the walls.  For the bedding I went over to pottery barn kids and bought a Madras quilt and pillow sham.  It definitely looks like him and it will go with whatever his favorite item of the moment is…firetrucks, surf boards, baseball, etc.

It took two days to move, paint, and assemble.  I couldn’t have gotten it all done without the help of Davy.  He painted this wall and he helped build Matty’s toy box bookshelf; thanks Davy!  The walls are still a little bare, but over time he will fill them up…  :O)  We decided to let Matty sleep on the little bed for the first two nights, just to make sure the paint fumes were mostly gone; and then here he is on his first night in his new bed!  So sweet!

Enjoy your new room beautiful boy…

Matty’s Birthday Breakfast…

The birthday tradition that we have in our house is:  every year when the boys wake up they find a present in their bed, we hear them over the monitor, and then shortly after we barge in to their room and sing “Happy Birthday to You!!!”  You can see here that we surprised poor Matty and he was confused as to what we were doing….

This year Matty’s gift was Chuck the Truck!  He rumbles and talks when you push different buttons…

For Matty’s Birthday Breakfast, I made him banana pancakes covered with strawberries and whipped cream!  Yum Yum!!

Happy 2nd Birthday Matty Bear!!!

To kick off Matty’s 2nd birthday, we surprised him with a party in his classroom at school today, November 15th.  After looking at our schedules, we decided that we would be able to give Matty more birthday time if we started the day before rather than just on his actual birthday.  When it came to deciding what theme the party would be, it was between Mickey and trains; and since he was Mickey for Halloween…this was the perfect opportunity to shine something else that he loves.  Granny, Andy, Davy, and I all show up to his classroom with cupcakes, snacks, and balloons for everyone… he was so happy to see all of us.  The class sang him happy birthday and he just beamed with smiles.

After we left the school, we headed home and again surprised Matty with Thomas decorations, a big homemade cake, and a giant singing Thomas balloon.  Davy immediately ran and gave him a big hug when we got home.

Now of course we couldn’t wait until after the cake to give him his presents…sooo…  From mom and dad he got his first big boy bike, from Davy a Cars helmet, from Papa a Little Peoples Car Garage, and from Granny the Slinky dog from the movie Toy Story (it looks like Maggie).

After presents were opened, Andy cooked up one of Matty’s favorite meals: grilled hot dogs, cheese puffs, chips, and strawberries.  I took down the baby swing off of the swing set, and put up a lowered big boy swing just for Matty.

Kelly and the kids came over to help us sing Happy Birthday to Matty and eat cake.  I was so proud of Matty.  He wanted to wear the hat and he actually blew out his own candles.  Such a sweet boy.

Off to bed Matty goes in his new birthday Thomas jammies….  Can’t wait to wake up and sing to you tomorrow morning birthday boy….  :O)
